MD U8 & MD U9 – Q and A’s

Q: What is the difference between the house league and MD (minor development) programs?
A: While both leagues focus on development and fun, House league (local league) has most travel limited to the Clarington region and a more relaxed schedule. MD requires a more significant time commitment and travel will be within the Lakeshore Hockey League for MD U8 and Victoria Durham League for MD U9.
Q: What are the costs associated with the MD U8 and MD U9 program?
A: Each player will be required to pay $665 to register with Orono upon acceptance. This charge includes all required fees associated with Hockey Canada, OHF and OMHA (including insurance fees), primary ice time charges, and all other operating costs associated to the OAAA.
Additional “rep fees” will be between $1200 – $1500 for the season and will include home and away jerseys, socks, additional ice times, and extra charges for team officials. Amounts will be dependent on the coach’s decision on tournaments and other costs associated with the team budget.
Q: How many practices can be expected?
A: Both age levels will be provided a minimum of 2 full ice practices a week.
Q: What will game structures look like for these age divisions?
A: The MD U8 & MD U9 program is required to follow the Player Pathway structure as defined by Hockey Canada, OHF and the OMHA. This means that U8 games will be half-ice for the duration of the season, while U9 games will be half-ice from October through December and will transition to full ice midway through January.

Rep B – U11 and up – Q and A’s

Q: What is the difference between the Select and Rep B programs?
A: While both leagues focus on development and fun, Select players still play on a house league (local league) team with some extra designated ice time and the option to play up to an extra 4 exhibition games a month and 4 tournaments a year. However, first commitment is to the LL team first.
Rep B requires a more significant time commitment and travel will be within the Victoria Durham League loop – https://victoriadurham.ca/. There are no limits to tournaments, as long as they fit within the playing season schedule.
Rep B teams will participate in a playoff season, and successful teams within each Tier will be eligible to participate in the OMHA championships.
Q: What are the costs associated with the Rep B program?
A: Each player will be required to pay $665 to register with Orono upon acceptance. This charge includes all required fees associated with Hockey Canada, OHF and OMHA (including insurance fees), primary ice time charges, and all other operating costs associated to the OAAA.
Additional “rep fees” will be between $1500 – $1800 for the season and will include home and away jerseys, socks, additional ice times, and extra charges for team officials. Amounts will be dependent on the coach’s decision on tournaments and other costs associated with the team budget.
Q: How many practices can be expected?
A: Both age levels will be provided a minimum of 2–3 full ice practices a week.

What to Expect from Tryouts – All Levels

Q: How many skates is my player guaranteed?
A: Every player will be given the opportunity to skate for two sessions. Cuts can be made after the second skate.
For further information on the OHF Player Movement, including Player Evaluation & Tryouts and Frequently Asked Questions, please visit https://ohf.on.ca/player-movement/
Q: Tryout ice
A: Players are guaranteed 2 ice times with the potential of 3 depending on the success of the player.
Q: What to expect at the first tryout
A: At the initial tryout players will be assigned a unique number that they can check on the team’s web page to see if they are successful after the second skate. Players will also be given a helmet sticker that should remain on for the duration of the tryouts.
Players/Parents will also receive a handout from the coach and OAAA with a brief description of expectations, tournaments, development opportunities, and a preliminary team budget.
The preliminary team budget is an outline of costs for the season, i.e. extra ice time, tournament fees, ref & timekeeper fees. These team fees are in addition to the OAAA registration fee.
Q: What to expect if you make the team
A: If a player is offered a spot on the team, they will be given a link to register. Once they complete registration and payment, the player will be considered on the team.
Q: How will I know if my player is successful?
A: The OAAA is working with the coaches to confirm this process. This information will be provided on the first night of tryouts.
Q: How long will I have to accept a spot if my player is invited to play?
A: The commitment process and acceptance window will be provided at the first night of tryouts.
