Orono’s U13 Rostered Selects showed true heart and determination at the Pete Ross Top Gun Invitational. After a weekend of big wins, they captured gold in a shootout thriller.
The April 11–13 weekend was a big one for our U13 Select team, kicking off Friday with a two-game round-robin in a whopping 18-team U13 division. The Pete Ross Top Gun Select Invitational was an impressive tournament, with teams from all over battling for top spot and bragging rights—not to mention a great-looking banner to hang proudly at home.
As the games progressed, our U13 Selects worked hard, racking up win after win and finishing first after the round-robin. That strong showing earned them a must-win game Saturday afternoon to keep the momentum going. Even after facing a man-down situation during one of the games, the team battled on, pulling off another two wins and proving they’ve taken to the ice with the “Never Give Up” mentality that’s echoed in every dressing room pep talk.
Sunday morning brought another must-win game to advance to the final. The team pushed through with two clutch goals in the third period, earning their place in the championship game—and what a final it was!
After a scoreless first period, Orono went goal-for-goal with the home team, the West Niagara Flying Aces, through the second and third, leading to overtime. Still tied after extra time, it came down to a three-player shootout. With the arena holding its breath, Orono buried their first two shots while our goalie shut the door on the opposing shooters, sealing the Gold Medal win!
